Polio Particles
Dr Mary Westbrook AM

Polio Particles is compiled by Mary Westbrook as items in the press or professional journals catch her eye. Included in this series are brief reviews of books on polio or post-polio, updates on post-polio research, information about immunisation and the status of global polio eradication, and other items of interest. Mary's series is now being syndicated around the world as other post-polio newsletter editors pick up on the interesting items Mary includes.

The first issue of Polio Particles appeared in Newsletter Issue 43 in December 1999. From this page you can access all the issues of Polio Particles. Issues 1 to 11 are in html format; all later issues are in pdf format.

Dr Mary Westbrook AM

Dr Mary Westbrook AM is a psychologist. Before her retirement from the University of Sydney she taught students in many health professions about the psychological and social aspects of disability and health care. Mary published the first Australian research investigating the late effects of polio and how polio survivors were coping with these new problems. She has presented these findings at Australian and International Conferences. Mary contracted polio when she was eleven and now uses a wheelchair due to polio's late effects. She has been an active member of the Network since its beginning.
