A Practical Approach to the Late Effects of Polio Written by Charlotte Leboeuf and published in 1991, it is hoped that this handbook will be of assistance to people who previously had polio and to all those who wish to obtain information on the acute polio infection and how it relates to the late effects of polio. By reading this book, it is hoped that those who previously had polio can understand how to cope with the late effects of polio, whether they already experience symptoms or simply wish to learn about it in order to try to prevent its onset. The book is available from the Post-Polio Network (NSW) Inc. |

Handbook on The Late Effects of Poliomyelitis for Physicians and Survivors GINI (Gazette International Networking Institute) in St Louis was one of the few polio-orientated organisations that did not forget the survivors of the polio epidemics after the introduction of the Salk and Sabin vaccines. In 1984 it published the Handbook on the Late Effects of Poliomyelitis for Physicians and Survivors. Its 31 pages contained 55 entries on topics relevant to polio survivors. Fifteen years later, in 1999, GINI (now known as Post-Polio Health International - PPHI) revised and expanded the Handbook to take account of new understanding of polio’s late effects based on research findings and the experiences of polio survivors and health practitioners. The new handbook grew to 120 pages with 90 entries written by 40 experts from four countries. It is edited by Dr Frederick Maynard, a specialist in rehabilitation medicine and researcher into post-polio, and Joan Headley, a polio survivor, who has been executive director of PPHI since Gini Laurie’s death in 1989. The new handbook is a most useful resource for any polio survivor and copies are available from Polio Network Victoria. |
Managing Post-Polio: A Guide to Living Well with Post-Polio Syndrome This 240-page book provides a comprehensive overview on dealing with the medical, psychological, vocational, and many other challenges of living with post-polio syndrome. Written by 20 authorities in their fields, the majority of whom are polio survivors themselves, Managing Post-Polio distils and summarises in lay terms the wealth of information presented at conferences and published in the medical and allied health literature over the past 10 to 15 years. This information is supplemented with personal stories of seven individuals who provide eloquent testimony to the many ways people have prevailed in the face of ongoing disability. Copiers of the book are available from the Post-Polio Network (NSW) Inc. |
Post Polio Syndrome: The Australian Experience In 2005 Polio Network Victoria produced this film, which is available for purchase from them in either DVD or video format. The aim of the film is to explain post-polio syndrome and the other late effects of polio as well as the resources and strategies available to people with these problems. The film will provide useful background information for health practitioners as it gives an excellent account of the condition and of the treatments available. Quite often health practitioners are unaware of treatments that other health professions can provide. A polio survivor recently diagnosed with post-polio problems will find the film very informative as much is said about what survivors can do in order to continue living a fulfilling life. The more knowledgeable polio survivor will find it a useful revision of what help is available now and if new symptoms occur. The DVD would be a valuable addition to local libraries. Frequently polio survivors newly experiencing post-polio symptoms are hesitant to approach their GPs and even when they do the information they receive is frequently sparse and sometimes inaccurate. The film could also be a very effective way to explain PPS to relatives and friends. |
The Path to Professionalism: Physiotherapy in Australia to the 1980s To mark the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) Centenary, the APA proudly releases the keenly-awaited history: The Path to Professionalism: Physiotherapy in Australia to the 1980s (by Philip Bentley and David Dunstan with a Foreword by Lance Twomey). Written in an engaging and very readable style, and illustrated with remarkable archival photographs, The Path to Professionalism tells the story of Australian physiotherapy from the formation of the Australasian Massage Association and its first meeting in February 1906, to the incorporation of the Australian Physiotherapy Association in 1982. The path to professionalism has not always been easy and physiotherapists have had to contend with a variety of obstacles, ranging from sceptical medical practitioners to competing therapies. This book traces the development of a profession that would not lie down. It shows how knowledge and practice grew as a result of the interventions provided so willingly as a response to two World Wars. It tells the story of educational battles. It paints a picture of emerging specialities. And it recounts how Australians led the world in the development of first contact practice. This book is the national history of the profession. It records in fascinating detail how skilled practitioners banded together to educate those who would follow, at the same time seeking the support of the law and medical practitioners in regulating who may practise and under what circumstances. Australian physiotherapy has been blessed with a considerable number of men and women of skill and vision who have been responsible for the expansion of its knowledge base, the timely application of therapeutic techniques to the ill or infirm, and the raising of its profile. This is their story as much as it is the story of their profession. Chapter 6 is entitled: ‘Muscle re-education’ – treating poliomyelitis. The text of the chapter can be downloaded in PDF format from the site. |
