NSW and Australian organisations for people with disabilities

New South Wales Disability Organisations

The Northcott Society
In 1929, The NSW Society for Crippled Children was founded by the Rotary Club of Sydney to assist families living with polio and tuberculosis. It was renamed The Northcott Society in 1995. Today Northcott operates throughout NSW and is considered a leader in the support and service provision for children and young adults with disabilities and their families. Northcott works to maximise the potential of the individual with disabilities.
Physical Disability Council of NSW
The Physical Disability Council of NSW (PDCN) provides a state-wide voice for people with a physical disability. We participate in networks to build better links between people with a physical disability, their families and organisations. Whenever there are discussions involving service providers, decision makers in government, the communities in which we live or in business, we believe there should be "nothing about us without us". Our aim is to assist and support people with physical disability in NSW to achieve equality of citizenship and full participation.
Paraplegic & Quadriplegic Association of NSW
Not long ago the life expectancy of someone with a serious spinal cord injury was just a few short years. Until World War II the life expectancy of a person with a spinal cord injury was less than three years, while people with quadriplegia were lucky if they lived more than one or two years. Today it's different. Thanks to antibiotics and advances in the care of spinal cord injuries, a person with paraplegia or quadriplegia can expect to live an average life span. Since ParaQuad's formation in 1961, we have also represented the interests of our members at all levels of government on matters that affect their well-being and maximise their opportunities in life. ParaQuad exists to empower people with a spinal cord injury to achieve their potential.
St George Association for People with Physical Disabilities
On May 25 1954, a small group of people with disabilities met in the RSL at Rockdale and established the St George District Fellowship of The Poliomyelitis Society. The founding President, Ashley Coope, and the Committee at that time probably had no idea that this simple beginning would still be a thriving organisation over fifty years later, the St George Association for People with Physical Disabilities Incorporated. The St George Association gives people with physical disabilities an opportunity to meet together socially, support one another, and participate in the disability movement.
MS Society of New South Wales
The Multiple Sclerosis Society of NSW provides a wide range of services to people with Multiple Sclerosis and allied neurological conditions and their families and carers. The Society's mission is to give hope to people with MS and their families by: promoting independent living and health for people with MS; informing, educating and fostering rights for people with MS; promoting research into the management of MS; and contributing to research into a cure for MS.
Muscular Dystrophy Association of NSW
The Muscular Dystrophy Association of NSW provides support, equipment, advice, referral, and advocacy to people with neuromuscular disorders and their carers. Funding research into improved treatment methods and the search for a cure is also a central priority.
Aboriginal Disability Network New South Wales
The Aboriginal Disability Network brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability to tell our stories, give each other support, create a voice for change, and speak for ourselves.
Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association of NSW
The Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association of NSW (MDAA) is the peak body for people from a non-English speaking background (NESB) with disability and their families and carers in NSW. MDAA is the only advocacy service in NSW available specifically to people from a NESB with disability, their families and carers. MDAA aims to promote, protect and secure the rights and interests of people from a NESB with disability and their families and carers in NSW.
